Shamanictrax Alaskan Malamutes

We are Bryony and Wayne at Shamanictrax Alaskan Malamutes.

Wayne was convinced we should get a dog, but it took us a year to select and research the breed. At the time Malamutes were a much rarer breed than they are now, with breeders harder to find. When looking, as fate would have it, our first choice moved closer to us just as we got in contact. We had to wait nearly a year but took our first malamute home towards the end of 2004.

Sasha came from a fabulous litter, she was and is a great introduction to the breed. We adde d Tia to our family nine months later, and any hope of denying our obsession with this fabulous breed was lost. They have dramatically different characters and temprements and both have taught us alot about the breed.

We had hoped to breed from Sasha but such a big step and we couldn’t get all the pieces of the puzzle in place so things didn’t work out. Our attitude was that if we didn’t find the right match then it wouldn’t happen. No half measures.

We wanted to expand and add to our pack, but only in the right direction. Then a breeding from a dog that we really liked has given us our third girl, Ghost.

We are extremely fortunate in that we have three girls all together and happy, we know other situations where it isn’t possible. But introducing Ghost has really made our pack complete.

Wayne is currently a member of the AMWA committee.

Bryony is currently the editor of the AMWA club magazine “The Worker” and on the AMCUK Breed Specialist Judges ‘C’ list.

 Showing & Working

We work and show all our malamutes and have had success in both arenas.

Bryony is the one in the ring at shows, normally identified by people as “her with the hair!”

Sasha and Tia won their stud book numbers in 2009 and after rocky start Ghost had supassed their wins before she was two years old. She has at last learnt what I expect from her on the end of a show lead!

Wayne runs the girls at rallies, although we do negotiate with friends so that we can both run the trek up at Aviemore.

 Diet and Health

After much research and reading we now feed our dogs on a BARF diet. Although we had no problems with the previous complete food that Sasha and Tia were raised on, they are all doing very well since we changed. Ghost has grown up on BARF from 8 weeks old and I can see the difference between her and her siblings who are fed complete.

We have used Herbal remedies on both Sasha and Tia with remarkable and positive results. I have spoken to Alison Hudd at Paws in Water for advice in this area.

 What is Shamanictrax?

Everyone asks what is Shamanictrax? Where did the name come from? We wanted a kennel name so that we could give all our dogs from different kennels a common name.

The name has two parts: Shamanic and Trax. Shamanic is known in many native cultures across the globe associated with original spirit healing, and Trax meaning to go, to travel. So linking the words into Shamanictrax for us means ‘the way to heal your soul’.
